Can an Old Dog Learn New Tricks? Yes.

What aging changes — and what it doesn’t — about the canine brain.

“Can’t teach an old dog new tricks” may be one of the most confidently repeated lies we’ve told about dogs. Older dogs can learn.

They may learn differently. They may need more repetition, shorter sessions, a quieter environment, or a little more time to process what we’re asking. Their hearing, eyesight, mobility, motivation, and attention may be changing along with their brains.

But slower is not the same thing as incapable.

And the research on aging dogs gives us a much more interesting picture than the old saying does.

The Aging Brain Is Still a Learning Brain

Aging does affect canine cognition. Researchers have documented age-related changes in attention, learning speed, working memory, and something called cognitive flexibility — the ability to change strategies when the rules of a problem change.

That last one is particularly interesting.

Imagine teaching a dog that the treat is always beneath the cup on the left. Once they’ve learned that rule, you switch it: now the reward is under the cup on the right. Learning the first rule is one task.

Realizing that the old rule no longer works and adapting to the new one requires something more: the brain has to let go of a previously successful strategy.

This is called reversal learning, and several studies have found that it tends to become more difficult with age. In a study of 107 family dogs, older dogs learned both a spatial discrimination and its reversal more slowly than younger dogs.

That doesn’t tell us that old dogs can’t learn. It tells us something far more useful:

They may need us to change how we teach.

Slower Learning Isn’t Lost Intelligence

One of my favorite studies on this subject involved 95 pet Border Collies ranging from five months to more than 13 years old.

The dogs learned visual discrimination tasks using a touchscreen — yes, senior dogs have apparently been using tablets for science — and were also tested on reasoning and long-term memory.

As the dogs aged, they generally required more sessions and more corrections to learn the visual discrimination tasks. The oldest dogs showed slower learning and reduced behavioral flexibility.

But six months later, when researchers tested their memory of what they had previously learned, they found no significant effect of age on long-term memory.

That’s a fascinating distinction.

An older brain may take longer to get information in without necessarily losing its ability to hold onto that information once it’s there.

So when a senior dog takes ten repetitions to understand something a younger dog picks up in three, that doesn’t mean the lesson is failing.

It may simply mean the lesson needs ten repetitions.

Attention Changes, Too

Sometimes what looks like difficulty learning isn’t really about learning at all. It may be attention.

Researchers at the Clever Dog Lab studied 185 pet dogs between six years old and geriatric age and found age-related declines in some measures of attentiveness. Older dogs took longer to orient toward certain stimuli and spent less time looking at them.

But not every type of attention declined equally. Selective attention remained relatively preserved, and dogs with more lifelong training experience performed better on some measures of attention. The researchers concluded that lifelong training appeared to delay or reduce some age-related changes in attentiveness.

That’s an important reminder when you’re working with an older dog.

If they look away, wander off, or seem to lose interest halfway through a lesson, the answer may not be to repeat yourself louder or become more demanding.

Try making the lesson shorter.

Make the environment quieter.

Increase the value of the reward.

Give them time to process.

Then try again.

The Brain Doesn’t Simply Stop Changing

This is where the phrase neuroplasticity comes in.

Neuroplasticity refers broadly to the nervous system’s ability to change its structure or function in response to experience. It doesn’t switch off when an animal becomes an adult.

Researchers have even found evidence of new neuron formation in the adult canine hippocampus, a brain region deeply involved in learning and memory. That neurogenesis decreases considerably with age, but in an aged-dog study, the number of newly generated neurons correlated with performance on several cognitive tasks.

That doesn’t mean teaching your senior dog “spin” is going to regenerate their brain. Biology is rarely that tidy.

But it does reinforce an important point: an aging canine brain is changing, not shut down.

And experience is still part of that equation.

Enrichment Is More Than Entertainment

Some of the longest-running canine aging research has asked what happens when older dogs aren’t simply housed and fed, but are regularly given opportunities for physical activity, environmental exploration, social interaction, and cognitive problem-solving.

In one two-year longitudinal study of aged Beagles, behavioral enrichment significantly improved discrimination learning. Reversal learning also improved in dogs receiving enrichment and/or an antioxidant-fortified diet, with the combined intervention producing the strongest performance.

A related three-year study found benefits in spatial-learning performance among aged dogs receiving behavioral enrichment and dietary intervention.

Researchers studying the brains of similarly treated aged dogs found something intriguing at the biological level as well. Dogs receiving combined environmental enrichment and the dietary intervention showed higher expression of BDNF — brain-derived neurotrophic factor — than untreated aged dogs, approaching levels found in younger animals. BDNF is involved in neuronal survival, learning, and plasticity.

There are important limits here. Much of this work involved laboratory Beagles, some interventions combined enrichment with specialized diets, and we shouldn’t turn those studies into the claim that a puzzle feeder prevents canine dementia.

But the broader idea is worth paying attention to:

Using the brain remains part of caring for the brain.

Your Senior Dog Still Needs Something to Figure Out

We tend to become wonderfully protective of our dogs as they age.

The walks get shorter. We help them into the car. We soften the bed. We stop asking them to do things that have become physically difficult.

All of that can be loving and appropriate. But sometimes, without meaning to, we also stop asking them to think.

The puppy gets training sessions.

The adolescent gets enrichment toys.

The adult gets adventures.

And the senior gets a very comfortable bed.

Please give them the comfortable bed. But give them something to figure out, too.

It doesn’t have to be difficult. Hide a few treats and let them use their nose. Teach a new hand signal. Put food inside a simple puzzle. Practice identifying toys by name. Let them choose between two walking directions. Introduce a new cue that their body can perform comfortably. Take them somewhere new and let them sniff without hurrying them along.

Mental enrichment doesn’t have to look impressive to us to be meaningful to them.

Teach the Dog You Have Now

An older dog may not be physically capable of learning the same tricks they could at three. That’s okay. Training should adapt to the body attached to the brain.

A dog with arthritis doesn’t need repeated sits and downs to prove they can still learn. A dog losing their hearing may actually become a wonderful student of hand signals. A visually impaired dog can learn tactile, scent, or verbal cues. A dog who tires quickly may thrive with three-minute training sessions instead of twenty.

We aren’t trying to make the senior dog perform like a young dog.

We’re giving this version of the dog an opportunity to remain curious, engaged, and successful. That distinction matters.

If the lesson constantly exceeds their physical or cognitive capacity, enrichment becomes frustration. The goal isn’t difficulty for difficulty’s sake. It’s an achievable problem followed by the satisfaction of figuring it out.

Don’t Confuse Normal Aging With Cognitive Dysfunction

Some cognitive change can occur with healthy aging, but substantial behavioral changes shouldn’t automatically be written off as “getting old.”

Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome, or CCDS, is an age-related neurodegenerative condition. Signs can include disorientation, changes in social interaction, disrupted sleep-wake cycles, loss of previously learned house training, altered activity, increased anxiety, and changes in learning and memory. AAHA notes that these signs can overlap with pain, sensory loss, neurological disease, and other medical conditions, which is why cognitive dysfunction is generally approached as a diagnosis of exclusion.

If your dog suddenly seems confused, gets stuck in familiar spaces, begins wandering at night, forgets well-established routines, or shows a noticeable change in personality or behavior, that’s worth bringing to your veterinarian rather than simply accepting it as old age.

There is a difference between taking longer to learn something new and seeming to lose access to things they have known for years.

Perhaps the Trick Is for Us

Maybe the old saying has the lesson backward.

An old dog can learn new tricks.

The question is whether we can learn a new way to teach an old dog.

Can we slow down instead of assuming they aren’t listening? Can we distinguish processing time from stubbornness? Can we modify a behavior so their aging body can comfortably perform it? Can we keep offering novelty without overwhelming them?

Most importantly, can we resist reducing a senior dog’s world simply because they’ve gotten older?

Age brings changes. Some cognitive abilities decline. Some tasks become harder. Some dogs will develop cognitive disease.

But older does not mean finished learning.

There is still curiosity there. Memory. Association. Problem solving. Preference. Communication. And, given the right invitation, something new to discover.

So yes, an old dog can learn new tricks.

Just let them learn like an old dog.
